Nic Sheff spent much of his childhood moving between the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles due to his parents' divorce. He began using alcohol and drugs before reaching his teenage years, and by high school was regularly using ecstasy and cocaine. He lived on the streets for extended periods, engaging in behaviors such as selling drugs and working as a prostitute to support his addiction. Faced with the choice of jail or rehabilitation, he dropped out of college to enter treatment and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
