Ovid was a Roman poet who lived from 43 BC to 17 or 18 AD. He is best known for his collections of erotic poetry, including the Heroides, Amores, and Ars Amatoria, as well as the Metamorphoses, a mythological hexameter poem. He also wrote the Fasti, a work about the Roman calendar, and the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, two collections of poems composed during his exile on the Black Sea. In addition to these major works, Ovid authored smaller pieces such as the Remedia Amoris, the Medicamina Faciei Femineae, and the Ibis, a long curse-poem. He also wrote a lost tragedy titled Medea. Ovid is considered a master of the elegiac couplet and is traditionally ranked among the three canonic poets of Latin literature, alongside Virgil and Horace. His poetry had a lasting influence on European art and literature.
