Pio Baroja y Nessi (1872-1956) was a Spanish writer of Basque descent, a doctor of medicine who abandoned the profession for journalism and the novel, one of the key figures of the Generation of '98. He is best known internationally for the trilogy La lucha por la vida (1922-1924), depicting Madrid's slums, and his masterpiece is considered El arbol de la ciencia (1911), a pessimistic Bildungsroman. He was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy in 1935.
