Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore was born in Pinner, Middlesex, the son of a Captain and his wife. He was raised in East Grinstead and educated at home due to chronic health problems, joining the British Astronomical Association at the age of eleven. After serving in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War, he taught school from 1945 to 1953 and published his first book, Guide to the Moon, in 1953. He became the longest-serving television presenter in the UK for the BBC's The Sky at Night, which began in 1957 and aired monthly until his death in 2012.
