Paul Frederic Bowles (December 30, 1910 – November 18, 1999) was an American expatriate composer, author, and translator. He was born in New York City and showed an early talent for music and writing. He studied at the University of Virginia and later studied music with Aaron Copland. Bowles wrote music for theatrical productions and composed other works. He achieved recognition with his first novel, The Sheltering Sky (1949), set in French North Africa, a region he had visited in 1931. In 1947, he settled in Tangier, where he lived for 52 years. His wife, Jane Bowles, joined him in 1948. He spent some winters in Sri Lanka during the early 1950s. Bowles became associated with Tangier and symbolized American expatriates in the city. He died in 1999 at the age of 88 and was buried in Lakemont Cemetery, upstate New York.
