Paul S. Boyer is a historian and author who served as Merle Curti Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has contributed to scholarly works such as the editorship of NOTABLE AMERICAN WOMEN, 1607–1950 and co-authoring SALEM POSSESSED: THE SOCIAL ORIGINS OF WITCHCRAFT. He has written extensively on American social and cultural history, including works on urban life, prophecy beliefs, atomic age thought, and post-World War II United States. He also served as editor-in-chief of the OXFORD COMPANION TO UNITED STATES HISTORY and has held visiting professor appointments at several institutions.
