Paulo Coelho (born 1947) is a Brazilian novelist, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, known for rich symbolism in depicting spiritually motivated journeys. After dropping out of law school in 1970 and traveling widely, he wrote pop and rock lyrics with Raul Seixas and worked for Polygram and CBS Records until 1980. His first book, O diario de um mago (1987), grew from walking the Camino de Santiago; O alquimista (1988) became an international best-seller.
