Peter Mayle (1939–2018) was a British businessman turned author who moved to France in the 1980s. Born in Brighton, Sussex, the youngest of three children, he moved with his parents to Barbados after World War II, where his father worked for the Colonial Office, then returned to England after leaving school at 16. He relocated to the Lubéron in southern France in the late 1980s, and his planned novel became instead A Year in Provence.
