Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat, considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. His highly charged compositions referenced erudite aspects of classical and Christian history, and his popular Baroque style emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality in keeping with the artistic aims of the Counter-Reformation. He produced altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects, and was also a prolific designer of cartoons for Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for Antwerp publishers.
