Gaius Petronius Arbiter, also sometimes called Titus Petronius Niger, was a Roman courtier who lived during the 1st century AD. He was active during the reign of Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 AD. Petronius is traditionally considered the author of the Satyricon, a satirical novel that is believed to have been written during the Neronian period. The Satyricon is one of the few surviving works of Roman literature that offers a glimpse into the social and cultural life of the time. Petronius died around 66 AD.
