Philip James Bailey was an English poet best known for his single voluminous work, Festus. The poem was originally published anonymously in 1839, with the original version printed by W. H. Jones in Manchester and issued by William Pickering in London. Bailey was often regarded as the father of the 'spasmodic' school of poetry. Although he made revisions to Festus in later editions, the work is still considered a singular example, with its initial version regarded as the most representative of his poetic power.
