Philippa Gregory was born on 9 January 1954 in Nairobi, Kenya, the second daughter of Elaine (Wedd) and Arthur Percy Gregory. Her family moved to England when she was two. She attended the University of Sussex and later the University of Edinburgh, where she earned a doctorate in 18th-century literature. She taught at several universities, including the University of Durham and the Open University, and was made a Fellow of Kingston University in 1994. She wrote her first novel, Wideacre, while completing her PhD. She has written historical novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, which was adapted into a film. She reviews for several publications and is a regular broadcaster. She lives on a 100-acre farm in the North York Moors national park. She founded the charity Gardens for The Gambia, which has built school gardens and wells in The Gambia. She has six children and stepchildren. Her interests include riding, walking, skiing, and gardening.
