He worked as a lawyer, later became a gold prospector in the Klondike for five years, and then pursued a career as a writer, achieving success with his first novel based on his Alaskan experiences. His work inspired several films, including adaptations of his novel The Spoilers. He also won an Olympic silver medal in water polo.
