Richard Flanagan was born in Tasmania in 1961 and is recognized as one of Australia’s leading novelists. His works include Death of a River Guide, The Sound of One Hand Clapping, Gould's Book of Fish (which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize), The Unknown Terrorist, and Wanting. His novels have received critical acclaim and have been published in 26 countries. Flanagan’s father, a survivor of the Burma Death Railway, died on the day Flanagan finished The Narrow Road to the Deep North.
