Richard Gordon, born Gordon Stanley Ostlere, was a British author best known for the popular Doctor series of comic novels, beginning with Doctor in the House (1952) and continuing through titles such as Doctor at Sea, Doctor at Large, and Doctor in the Soup (1986). A surgeon by training, he also wrote nonfiction books about the history of medicine.
