Richard Arthur Warren Hughes was born in Weybridge, Surrey, the son of a civil servant. He was educated at Charterhouse and attended Oriel College, Oxford University, where he co-edited Oxford Poetry in 1921. He wrote four novels, the most famous being A High Wind in Jamaica (1929), and also authored plays, short stories, and juvenile fiction. After serving in a desk job during World War II, he wrote scripts for Ealing Studios for ten years and later composed the trilogy The Human Predicament, of which the first two volumes were published.
