Richard Matheson (1926-2013) was an American fiction writer born in Allendale, New Jersey, to Norwegian immigrant parents, and raised in Brooklyn. He graduated Brooklyn Technical High School in 1943, served as an infantry soldier in World War II, and earned a journalism degree from the University of Missouri in 1949. His first story, "Born of Man and Woman," appeared in 1950.
