Richard McKay Rorty (October 4, 1931 – June 8, 2007) was an American philosopher. He studied at the University of Chicago and Yale University, where he developed interests in both the history of philosophy and contemporary analytic philosophy. He worked at Princeton University in the 1960s, focusing on analytic philosophy. Later, he rejected the idea that knowledge involves accurately representing an independent world. Rorty held academic positions at Princeton University, the University of Virginia, and Stanford University. His notable works include Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979), Consequences of Pragmatism (1982), and Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity (1989).
