Robert Conquest

Robert Conquest was born in Malvern, Worcestershire, the son of an American businessman and a Norwegian mother. He was educated at Winchester College, the University of Grenoble, and Oxford University, where he studied modern history and earned degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and a doctorate in Soviet history. After serving as an intelligence officer during World War II and working in the Foreign Office, he became a freelance writer and historian, publishing works on Soviet history and politics, and later joined the Hoover Institution at Stanford University as a research fellow.
