Robert K. Massie was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He studied history at Yale University and Oxford University. He pursued a career as a writer and editor, contributing to publications such as Newsweek, USA-1, The Saturday Evening Post, The Reporter, Saturday Review, The New York Times Magazine, and The New York Times Book Review. His interest in the history of Nicholas and Alexandra was influenced by the experience of his own son's illness with hemophilia.
