Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic. He is commonly known as Rūmī, a name meaning "the Roman," derived from the fact that he lived in an area called Rūm, which had been under Byzantine rule. Rūmī is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Persian literature and Sufi tradition. His works, primarily written in Persian, explore themes of love, spirituality, and the human relationship with the divine. Rūmī's poetry continues to be widely read and studied around the world.
