Ruth Fulton Benedict (1887-1948) was an American anthropologist and folklorist whose theories profoundly influenced cultural anthropology, especially culture and personality studies. She studied under Franz Boas at Columbia, earning her PhD in 1923, and wrote Patterns of Culture (1934) and The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946). She served as president of the American Anthropological Association.
