Born in Antioch around 349 AD into a wealthy family, he received a thorough education in rhetoric under Libanius and in religion under Diodore. In 397, he was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople. He died on 14 September 407 in Comana Pontica while en route to a place of banishment. He is recognized as a saint by the Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches, as well as by other Christian traditions. The Coptic Church also honors him as a saint. He is known as a Church Father, Archbishop of Constantinople, and Christian saint.
