Saint John of Damascus (c. 675–749) was a Christian monk, priest, hymnographer, and apologist, born and raised in Damascus. A polymath whose fields of interest included law, theology, philosophy, and music, he wrote works expounding the Christian faith and composed hymns that remain in liturgical use in Eastern Christian practice and in western Lutheranism at Easter.
