Samuel Adams Drake was raised in Boston. He worked as a telegraphic agent for the New York Associated Press in Kansas, later becoming a journalist for the St. Louis Republican and the Louisville Journal, and briefly edited the Leavenworth Times. He joined the state militia and served throughout the American Civil War, attaining the rank of brigadier general of militia in 1863 and becoming colonel of the 17th Kansas Volunteers in 1864, commanding the post of Paola, Kansas, during Price's invasion of Missouri. He returned to Boston in 1871 and resumed literary work.
