Samuel Madden was an Irish author who wrote works including Themistocles; The Lover of His Country, Reflections and Resolutions Proper for the Gentlemen of Ireland, and Memoirs of the Twentieth Century. Dr. Samuel Johnson praised him, stating, "His was a name which Ireland ought to honour." He proposed a scheme to the Royal Dublin Society to fund improvements in agriculture and arts in Ireland through premiums, which led to his nickname "Premium.
