Samuel Smiles

1 standalone book

Samuel Smiles (1812–1904) was a Scottish author and government reformer. Although he campaigned on a Chartist platform, he argued that progress would come more from new attitudes than from new laws. His principal work, Self-Help (1859), promoted thrift and self-improvement and has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism," with lasting influence on British political thought.
