Sarah Caudwell was a barrister who transitioned into crime writing after finding a lack of satisfying crime novels. She was educated at Aberdeen High School for Girls and the local university, where she studied Latin and ancient Greek, and later read law at St Anne's College, Oxford. Her books consistently featured classical references in their titles, reflecting her academic background. She died of cancer at the age of 60.
