Raimund Pretzel (1907–1999), better known by his pseudonym Sebastian Haffner, was a German journalist and historian. As an émigré in Britain during World War II, he argued that accommodation with Adolf Hitler and the German Reich was impossible, and that peace could be secured only by rolling history back and restoring Germany to a network of smaller states. Working later as a journalist in West Germany, his independence and taste for provocation led to breaks with both liberal and conservative editors, and his intervention in the 1962 Spiegel affair sharply raised his profile.
