Shimon bar Yochai, also known by the acronym Rashbi, was a 2nd-century tanna (sage) of the land of Israel and one of the most eminent disciples of Rabbi Akiva. Kabbalistic tradition ascribes the Zohar, a foundational 13th-century work of Kabbalah, to him, though this attribution is rejected by modern scholars.
