Shitou Xiqian was an 8th-century Chinese Chan Buddhist teacher and author. All existing branches of Chan throughout the world are said to descend either from Shitou Xiqian or from his contemporary Mazu Daoyi. He is recognized as a significant figure in the history of Chan Buddhism. His work and teachings contributed to the development and spread of Chan tradition.
