Sigismund Wilhelm Koelle

Sigismund Wilhelm Koelle was a German missionary who worked for the Church Missionary Society, initially in Sierra Leone and later in Constantinople. He became a pioneering scholar of African languages and published a major study in 1854 titled Polyglotta Africana, which marked the beginning of serious European study of African languages. Koelle was born in 1820 and died in 1902.
