Sir John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury (1834–1913), was an English banker, Liberal politician, philanthropist, scientist, and polymath. He made significant contributions to archaeology, ethnography, and several branches of biology, coined the terms "Palaeolithic" and "Neolithic", and introduced the first law protecting the UK's archaeological and architectural heritage.
