Major General Smedley Darlington Butler was a United States Marine Corps officer who served for 34 years and participated in numerous conflicts including the Philippine–American War, the Boxer Rebellion, the Mexican Revolution, World War I, and the Banana Wars. He was the most decorated Marine in U.S. military history, receiving sixteen medals, including two Medals of Honor and the Marine Corps Brevet Medal. Butler later became an anti-war advocate and was known for his activism and public speaking. He died in 1940.
