Stewart Edward White was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1895 and later received an M.A. in 1903. From approximately 1900 to 1922, he wrote fiction and non-fiction focused on adventure, travel, natural history, and outdoor living. In 1922, he began collaborating with his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Grant White, on spiritual accounts that were presented as received messages, and they also wrote about their travels in California.
