Studs Terkel was born Louis Terkel in New York on May 16, 1912. The family moved to Chicago in 1922 and operated a rooming house, later the Wells-Grand Hotel, where he gained exposure to a wide range of people through interactions with tenants and visitors in the lobby and nearby Bughouse Square. He attended the University of Chicago and received a law degree in 1934, later working with the WPA Writers Project in the radio division and serving in the Air Force. In 1944, he began hosting his own radio show on WENR, which evolved into a platform for his distinctive interviewing style, and later hosted a television show called Stud's Place.
