Susanna Mary Clarke, born November 1, 1959, is an English author known for her debut novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2004), a Hugo Award-winning alternative history. She began the novel in 1993, working on it in her spare time, and published short stories from its universe over the next decade before Bloomsbury bought the manuscript in 2003. The novel became a bestseller.
