Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965) was an American, later British, poet, playwright, and literary critic, arguably the most important English-language poet of the 20th century. His first notable publication, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, begun in February 1910 and published in Chicago in June 1915, is regarded as a masterpiece of modernism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Order of Merit in 1948.
