Takeda, Izumo

1 standalone book

Takeda Izumo II (1691–1756) was a Japanese playwright who succeeded Chikamatsu Monzaemon at the Takemoto Theater in Osaka. He authored three of the most renowned period plays in the bunraku repertoire: Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy, Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees, and The Treasury of Loyal Retainers. His works are noted for their theatricality and richness, though they are often considered to have less literary refinement than those of his predecessor.
