Tamara Talbot Rice was a Russian-born then English art historian known for her writings on Byzantine, Russian, and Central Asian art. She was born Elena Abelson to Louisa Elizabeth Vilenkin and Israel Boris Abelevich Abelson, with Leo Tolstoy serving as her godfather. Her family emigrated to England following the Russian Revolution of 1917, after which she attended Cheltenham Ladies' College and St. Hugh's College, Oxford. She married the English art historian David Talbot Rice in 1927 and collaborated with him on scholarly work, publishing under the surname Talbot Rice.
