Sir Terence Mervyn Rattigan (1911-1977), born in South Kensington, London, of Irish extraction, was an English screenwriter and playwright educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Oxford. He had early success with the farces French Without Tears (1936) and While the Sun Shines (1943), followed by The Winslow Boy (1946) and Separate Tables (1945), perhaps his best-known work. He was knighted in 1971.
