Tokyo-born Tetsuko Kuroyanagi was a prominent Japanese TV personality who was voted Japan's most popular TV host for five consecutive years. She studied opera singing at Tokyo College of Music but later pursued a career in acting, earning a prestigious award for her work in radio and television. In 1972, she traveled to New York to study acting and wrote the book From New York with Love. She hosted "Tetsuko's Room," Japan's first daily TV talk show, which received the highest television award in the country. Kuroyanagi was also deeply involved in welfare efforts, introducing America's National Theater of the Deaf to Japan and performing with them in sign language. The Totto Foundation, funded by her book royalties, trains deaf actors professionally. She authored Pandas and I and was a conservationist with a long-standing interest in the Giant Panda. In 1984, she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
