William Timothy O'Brien, born on October 1, 1946, is an American novelist known for his works on the Vietnam War. His most recognized work is The Things They Carried (1990), a collection of linked semi-autobiographical stories based on his experiences in the war. The New York Times called the book a Vietnam classic in 2010. He also wrote Going After Cacciato (1978), a war novel set in Vietnam, and later novels exploring the postwar lives of veterans. Since the 2003–2004 academic year, O'Brien has held the endowed chair at the MFA program of Texas State University–San Marcos every other year.
