Tom Wolfe was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. He earned a B.A. from Washington and Lee University and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. He began his journalism career in 1956 as a reporter for the Springfield (Massachusetts) Union, later serving as The Washington Post's Latin American correspondent and then joining the New York Herald-Tribune. He became a staff writer for New York magazine and published his first book, The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, in 1965, which established him as a prominent figure in the New Journalism movement.
