Thomas Anthony de Paola was born in Meriden, Connecticut. He pursued art from an early age, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1956 from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and later a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1969 from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He taught art at several institutions, including Newton College of the Sacred Heart, San Francisco College for Women, Chamberlayne Junior College, and Colby-Sawyer College. He became a full-time author and illustrator in 1978, residing in New London, New Hampshire, and received the Caldecott Honor in 1976 for Strega Nona. He passed away in March 2020.
