Violet Vivian Finlay, known as V. A. Stuart, was born in Berkshire, England, UK, the daughter of Alice Kathleen (née Norton) and Sir Campbell Kirkman Finlay, a director of Burmah Oil Company Ltd. She spent much of her youth in Rangoon, Burma, and later lived in various locations across Southeast Asia. She studied law in London and medicine at the University of London, later obtaining a pathologist qualification from the University of Budapest in 1938. She emigrated to Australia in 1939 with her second husband, Hungarian doctor Geza Santow, with whom she worked.
