Jean Marcel Adolphe Bruller (1902-1991), a French author and illustrator, was born in France to a Hungarian Jewish father and a French mother. Trained as an electrical engineer, he became a graphic artist, illustrating cartoons and absurd illustrated novels, notably André Maurois's Patapoufs and Filifers. In 1941, during the German occupation, he joined the resistance and, under the pseudonym Vercors, co-founded the clandestine publishing house Les Éditions de Minuit with Pierre de Lescure.
