Victoria E. Bynum is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Texas State University in San Marcos. Her research examines Southern dissenters, including families who opposed secession and the Confederacy. She has studied the guerrilla band led by Newt Knight in Mississippi's "Free State of Jones," the anti-slavery Wesleyan Methodist community in North Carolina's Quaker Belt, Southern women who challenged societal norms, Southerners who crossed racial boundaries, and African Americans who resisted Jim Crow directives.
