Virginia Hamilton was born and raised in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She attended Antioch College on a scholarship and later transferred to Ohio State University to study literature and creative writing. After moving to New York City in 1958, she worked odd jobs, studied fiction writing at the New School for Social Research, and began writing. She published her first book, Zeely, in 1967, which won multiple awards, and went on to publish 41 books, primarily for children, before dying of breast cancer in 2002.
