Władysław Szpilman (1911–2000) was a Polish Jewish pianist, composer, and Holocaust survivor. He is best known as the central figure in the Roman Polanski film The Pianist, which was based on his autobiographical account of surviving the German occupation of Warsaw and the Warsaw Uprising. His experiences during World War II were documented in his writings, which provided the basis for the film.
